March Lake Lanier Fishing Report

Time for a quick report on the March bite on Lake Lanier!  I have made it out several times this week after both crappie and bass.  The bite is slow for March but is improving daily!  Spring has sprung and the fishing is about to be on fire!  Winds have made fishing from the kayak difficult this week which makes choosing your launch location critical to catching fish!

I bass fished today and landed one nice one with several more coming unbuttoned.  My go to spring jig head worm combo produced!  The above fish bit out in front of a deep dock on the south end of the lake.  I could not get a shallow bite but that doesn't mean that they weren't there.  Look for the spots to move shallower as the weather warms and they get ready to spawn.

The crappie bite on the north end was slow for me this week.  My bites all came in the afternoon after the sun came up!  Shaded docks in 15ft of water produced and like the spots I did not get any shallow bites yet, typically this time of year I catch crappie around blowdowns as they prep for the spawn.  1/32 oz jig/grub combo in bright colors as well as the electric chicken Bobby Garland jigs produced.

The weather is great and the fishing will keep getting better and better!  Get out there in the yak and catch some fish!

Small Lake Fishing 3-4

Well the weather is finally getting better!  This February was one of the coldest that I can remember in Georgia!  Finally March is here and we have some decent weather!  Large bodies of water like Lake Lanier take a while to warm up so I decided to fish a small North GA lake today for some crappie or bass.  The crappie did not cooperate but I got on a decent Largemouth bite with ultralights and a 2 inch grub.

The bass were holding in 5-10 feet of water off of blowdowns and brush.  I only took ultralight gear as my target was crappie.  These small bass are a ton of fun on the light gear!  I did not land any large fish but saw some HUGE bass cruising the shallows!  I will definitely take a spinnerbait and a crank next time I visit this lake!

It was nice to be back on the water in the kayak and catching fish!  Hope to report on the crappie bite next time!

Cold Water Kayak Crappie Fishing Lake Lanier

Here is the youtube video I recently posted on my other blog, www.lanierkayakfishing.com , it shows how to "shoot a dock" for crappie on lake lanier.

January is a great time to get out in the kayak on Lake Lanier and do some Crappie Fishing.  This video shows you the basics of the technique and a few fish landed in the process.

January Lanier Kayak Fishing Report - Crappie Time!

The New Year is here and that means Crappie Time on Lake Lanier! While we have experienced some cold temps in Georgia this winter the crappie fishing is still heating up on Lanier! I am catching these fish under docks on the north end of the lake using a 1/32 oz jig tipped with a crappie nibble. Docks with 12 plus feet out in front are the primary targets but don't hesitate to try deeper or shallower docks as these fish continue to move up on prep for the spawn.

Helpful tips on Crappie fishing from the Kayak can be found at this article:  Lake Lanier Kayak Crappie Fishing

I will post an updated report soon and plan to update the kayak crappie fishing article.  Good luck fishing!  Yakdawg

April Lanier Kayak Fishing report!

Spring is finally here to stay this time and the fish are biting well on lanier! The best thing going right now on the lake is the crappie bite. Most of my fish are being caught on a 1/32 oz chartuese Marabou jig tipped with a crappie nibble. Fish seem to be moving shallower, I have been catching good fish under shaded docks on the north end of the lake and some around brush. I will be out this week to check out the shallow action as I expect it is on right now!

Bass are also biting well, I have caught quite a few while crappie fishing. A green finesse worm fished around docks and brush will also get strikes right now. I like to use a spot sticker jig head with these finesse worms or a small bullet weight.

Pretty much any fish that swims in the lake may bite while you are crappie fishing!
I have not been striper fishing lately but the bite is said to be picking up. Will report back later when I get out after the linesiders! Good luck on the lake! Form more information visit our online forum at http://lanierkayakfishing.proboards.com/

March/Springtime Report

After a cold winter in GA the weather is finally starting to warm up and the fishing is improving! Springtime is one of the best times of year to get out and enjoy a day on the lake or river in a kayak! The mild temps and reduced boat traffic/fishing pressure make for an enjoyable experience!

Crappie:
This time of year one of your best bets from the yak are crappie!  If you like to catch numbers of fish, have fun and take a few home for dinner then give crappie fishing a shot!  My number one producing lure so far this year has been a hand tied marabou jig in chartruese tipped with a crappie nibble.  Fish this lure around boat docks and blowdowns for a nice mixed bag of bass, crappie bream and basically any other fish that swims in the lake!  As the fish move shallower over the next few weeks continue to use a jig around brush and also take a few corks and light wire hooks to throw out a minnow or gulp alive bait to entice spawning crappie!

Bass/Stripers:
I have been out several times for stripers and the bite is slow during the day!  Pulling free-lined herring will work but have patience!  This is a great time of year to catch a trophy, my biggest striper last year was caught in late March and it was the only bite I got in eight hours!  Kayak anglers are bringing in some good catches at night on long A bombers, if you do go out at night make sure you have a good stern light and headlamp.

The shallow bite for bass is starting and can be a fun way to spend an afternoon off in the yak!  Throwing a buck tail towards the bank, points and humps is a popular technique for stripers but will also get you some nice spots if the stripers aren't around.  My favorite technique for shallow spots is a plastic finesse worm rigged on a light spot sticker jig head or texas rigged.  This bite should pick up as the weather warms up next week.  Fishing a plastic worm around docks and brush will bring some nice spotted bass aboard the yak!
Good luck fishing, April is going to be a great month!  For more information on kayak fishing in Lanier and surrounding waters visit our online forum at http://lanierkayakfishing.proboards.com/

Warmer Weather Sends the Stripers back down!

I have been out several times over the past few weeks for stripers and the bite has been good at times and slow at others!  The top-water bite for stripers has slowed down over the past few weeks with the warmer than normal temps.  I have been back to fishing downlines at 30-45 feet deep over a 50-90 foot bottom!  Kind of like summertime fishing!  Make sure to keep a topwater lure handy though just in case!

Spots are still coming up around points and humps.  Try out a large topwater plug like a zara spook or pencil popper for the surfacing spots.  The kayak is a great way to sneak up on the busting fish, often they will not even know you are there and continue to break close to the yak!  Will be back out later this week, good luck!
